Brief History: Luke Campbell's history isn't that well known; up until a short while ago, he wasn't anything special at all - just a less-than-stellar teenager living in Newark, New Jersey. His mother, Mary Campbell, was always a very judgmental, overbearing woman, always constantly tearing him down, no matter what he did or how he acted. His father left the family, leaving Luke alone with the mother who sincerely seemed to hate him . . . not that he was much fonder of her, if he was honest with himself. He was not a special student, or a good boy; he was considered strange, a loser, and was constantly getting into fights. In fact, one particular fight landed him in juvenile hall for the night, after he punched a boy at school. It was the day he was brought home by his mother that everything changed. Their home had been invaded by a dark man and his hostage - a man that he called "Special Agent Simmons". The hostage was in horrible condition, obviously tortured, and an invisible force attacked both Mary and Luke, holding them in place. The dark man, later revealed to be Sylar, intended to torture Luke and his mother in front of Simmons, to make him crack and give up information. They were kept there, at the mercy of Sylar, until he chose to go after Luke's mother as his first torture victim. He began to notice and sense how Luke felt, what he really thought about his mother, and saw how much like himself he seemed to be. He said as much, and Luke, in a slight panic and anger, unconsciously used his ability to instantly boil the coffee Sylar was drinking, making it splash all over him and distracting him from his mental attack. Once the existence of his ability was confirmed, Sylar demanded Luke show him, having him melt a plastic action figure, after which the boy described his ability as being "kind of like a microwave," and then jokingly mentioned "You should see what happens around pacemakers."
It was at this point that the tables turned; Sylar, seeing something familiar in the young man, started questioning his lie earlier, about the reason for his fight, which he had claimed was because the other boy had called his mother a whore. Luke tried to convince Sylar that his living not far from Samson Gray's taxidermy shop was coincidence, that he was just a loser kid; Sylar's lie detector ability proved his comments false, and only seemed to raise the interest level in the teen, after which Luke admitted that his mother hates him. Sylar, seeing the will, the same thought processes he had, in this teen, pushed on it. The argument and discussion served as distraction, during which Simmons broke free of his captivity and tried to shoot Sylar in the back of the head. Panicking and acting on instinct, Luke used his ability to stop Simmons, killing him in the process. That evening, as Sylar left the house, Luke followed him, asking him to let Luke come with him. At first Sylar declined; he told him that he had killed Sylar's one chance at finding his father. Sure, the boy had saved his life, and as a result he was letting him live. Luke continued to follow, using everything he could think of to convince Sylar; he promised to tell him more about Samson Gray. When that didn't work, he began a more pitiful attempt, telling Sylar that he couldn't stay there, not with his mother and his ability; that Sylar was the only one who understood him. A last ditch effort paid off, though: he told Sylar that he knew where Samson Gray was. Through the lie detector ability, Sylar was able to know that Luke at least believed what he was saying, that he could find Sylar's father. The teen, in a moment of understanding, went on to say that he knew why Sylar was looking.
"Because you're just like me: trying to figure out why you are the way you are. And in this whole hellish world, your dad might be the only answer."
He promised to walk Sylar right up his father's driveway, if he would only take Luke with him. After agreeing, Luke stole his mother's car keys and set out with Sylar to find the elusive Samson Gray.
